An overweight problem can be due to eating too many calories, liver congestion, glandular malfunction, and the fluid that the body retains to dilute toxins. The most offending foods are trans fats and sugars. People who eat as little as others but seem to gain weight in spite of this are often deficient in the digestive enzyme lipase, and the food-form minerals chromium, zinc, and selenium. Lipase is required by the body to digest fat in order to utilize it as energy. Chromium is required for insulin to work efficiently in controlling hunger, regulating energy production, and utilizing fat. |
| Another example is of an overweight person who suddenly dies from a heart attack. The person tolerated the extra weight and ignored the toxic burden it represented. Excess fat creates a heavier blood circulation load. This requires the heart to work harder and increase blood pressure to service the body. The person may even have had pains in the chest and arms, or difficulty breathing. These are all signs the body gives to warn that serious problems lie ahead if corrective action is not taken.
When the body's warning signals are ignored, at some point one of two things happens. |
| In addition to the physical contributors of an overweight problem, there is usually an emotional component that needs to be addressed to achieve a permanent return to the body's ideal weight. "Within every big person is a big emotional issue begging for attention and resolution."35
Weight problems are corrected by detoxifying the body through cleansing the colon and liver, and changing to a healthy lifestyle. The body must be made less acid. The best foods that help to do this are fresh vegetable juices made from carrots, celery, spinach, beets, parsley, and a little ginger. |
| If the body was overweight, it begins to lose weight. Daily energy also increases. Figure 10.1 shows, in summary format, the main relationships of cellular pH to health and disease in the human body.
In summary, when the body's pH is out of balance (below 6.8), we cannot digest and assimilate food and supplements effectively. This means we do not benefit from their essential nutrients; most of them pass right through us. Our cells gradually begin to metabolize at a lower rate and body mineral reserves start to deplete. |
| For example, if you are overweight and repeat the affirmation, "I have a slender body," you know it's a lie because at the present time you don't have a slender body. There is a conflict and the resulting vibration is negative. This is because your words are not congruent with your present beliefs, feelings, and reality. However, a desire statement such as, "I am excited at the thought of having a slender body," is believable, provokes positive feelings, and can ring true with your subconscious mind. |
| Some of the characteristics of a totally healthy person, devoid of all toxins, would be the following:17
Neither overweight nor underweight. Solid muscular build. No weakness or fatigue. þBright eyes, whites not yellow or blood shot. No presence of disease or illness.
Quick healing of injuries.
Clear, soft, and smooth skin.
Sweet breath.
No body odor.
Craving for natural foods.
Loss of desire for toxic foods and substances.
The consumption of toxic foods and substances produces immediate cleansing reaction: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cold symptoms, sluggishness, et cetera. |

Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and an overall reduced quality of life are a few of the major problems overweight people face. The rate of obesity-related ailments like type 2 diabetes has doubled every ten years. Obese people also wear out their joints from carrying around extra pounds, which can cause joint disease and joint failure. The cost of these obesity-related health problems is $70 billion per year. |

When you consider that two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, that fully a quarter of us have metabolic syndrome, that fifty-four million have prediabetes, and that the incidence of type 2 diabetes has risen 5 percent annually since 1990, going from 4 percent to 7.7 percent of the adult population (that's more than twenty million Americans), the question is not nearly as silly as it sounds. |

Those with a family history of gallstones, who are overweight or have high cholesterol, or who have inflammatory stomach conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, are more at risk. Women who have had several pregnancies or who are on a birth-control pill are also more susceptible. The symptoms of gallbladder disease vary widely from mild discomfort to a severe pain that usually begins after eating. A poor diet, especially one high in fatty foods, is a contributory factor to the disease. |

CHAPTER VII
METHYL MADNESS: ROAD TO THE FINAL PHENOTYPE
One-third of American children are overweight or obese— that's 25 million kids. In the last thirty years, the percentage of obese two- to five-year-olds has doubled—and the percentage of obese six- to eleven-year-olds has tripled. A baby girl born in 2000 now has a 40percent chance—almost a coin toss—of developing of Type 2 diabetes, and that's directly related to the huge surge in heavy kids.
What's even sadder is that many of these children are showing symptoms of obesity-related illness while they're still kids. |

Epidemiologic studies such as the Nurses' Health Study, the Adventist Health Study, and the Physicians' Follow-up Study universally show that those who eat the most nuts also tend to have the lowest body mass indexes (a measure of overweight). Sure, almonds have fat and calories, and you can't eat two tons of them at a time and expect to lose weight, but there is a massive amount of research showing that fat (and protein) are highly satiating, and that almonds eaten in moderation can actually help with weight loss. |
| If you're not overweight and don't have issues with blood sugar, there are no concerns about fruit at all. Eat it, juice it, consume it raw or cooked, just make it a part of your daily routine (along, of course, with tons of vegetables). But if weight, diabetes, or any other condition that requires paying attention to your blood sugar is an issue, you might not want to munch mindlessly on large bowls of grapes and bananas.

So formation is faster
While being overweight is death to your joints (not to mention your heart and just about every other organ), it turns out that underweight people tend to get finally, a benefit! But don't use that to justify the extra portions. osteoporosis more than others. Fat stores estrogen, which maintains bone densitythan resorption, and bone density may increase as the fracture risk decreases. Teriparatide (Forteo), a form of a parathyroid hormone, is a new osteoporosis medication and the first to increase the rate of bone formation. |
| When you're overweight, you tend to breathe through your mouth instead of your nose. The theory goes that because of that, you're not sucking those rich sources of nitric oxide into your lungs, so the airways are less dilated, and oxygen levels can drop. And that's figure 11 The Great Gas Nasal breathing allows you to get nitric oxide into your system to help dilate your lung passages and arteries to keep your blood moving freely. what might make you fall into one of the cascading cycles where you feel drained, tired, and stressed, which further inhibits your ability to get NO. |
| That's because when you have diabetes—the disease that's associated with blood sugar and insulin malfunction in overweight people—you're essentially pickling yourself, basting yourself in fluid that has a high concentration of sugar. The difference is that your diabetic pickle doesn't exactly go all that well with a sandwich and some chips.
Diabetes serves as a microcosm of the aging process. |
| Normally, glucose is what gives our cells energy, but when we develop insulin resistance (from having a genetic predisposition such as a family history of type 2 diabetes or from being overweight), the figure El The Great Ooop Like pollution or acid rain, glycosylation junks up the beautiful parts of the city. insulin can't effectively get all the glucose into our cells. If glucose can't get into a cell, it stays in the blood and gunks up the proteins in our body. It's a little bit like acid rain—it damages the things it touches and makes them leaky. |

Because my German shepherd, Sarge, was a lirtle overweight and also had dry skin, we chose to feed the Lite Lamb and Rice formula. This did seem to solve his dry skin problem and the food contains few ingredients that might cause allergies. My cats, being rather fussy eaters, refused to eat the Innova dry food and also the Innova lite canned food, but they did enjoy the Innova cat food, which seems to have a better consistency for cats.

Type 2 diabetes (the kind associated with being overweight) increases the risk of Alzheimer's, probably by increasing inflammation or arterial aging, but also because too much of the hormone insulin in the brain can stimulate beta-amyloid buildup. In fact, Alzheimer's is now being called type 3 diabetes. not going to remember the name of the kid who played Bobby Brady on The Brady Bunch (ten points if you said Mike Lookinland before we did). |
| Prostate problems have the same risk factors as so many other health problems, like a diet high in saturated fats and being overweight. But a number of nutrients have been shown to improve prostate health, such as green tea (because of the polyphenols) and pomegranates. In a study of men who refused prostate surgery, one group of men only did watchful waiting (which is having a doc observe a patient but not intervene unless it's requested), while the other group went on an aggressive plant-based diet and stress reduction program. |

Pulsatilla: Use this remedy in the established or final phase of a heavy cold, when you are likely to breathe through the mouth at night because nasal passages become severely stuffed up when lying down. As a result, the mouth and tongue feel extremely dry and coated on waking, and there may be a tendency to wake during the night to take a sip of water to ease the unpleasant, dry sensation in the mouth. |

For women who are overweight, and therefore have extra fat cells to produce estrogen, and do not have a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables, a dietary supplement would certainly be in order. Men, too, experience a rise in estrogen levels with advancing age and would benefit from taking supplements to protect from prostate cancer.
Instability, particularly following exposure to light, has been brought up as a criticism of indole-3 carbinol dietary supplements. But this does not appear to have hampered its effectiveness in human studies. |

The Bottom Line
I argue that if you are healthy; exercise; are not overweight; don't smoke; don't have a family history of heart disease, familial hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, or diabetes but have high cholesterol, you should not take a statin or any cholesterol-lowering drug. It's better to change your lifestyle.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against routine screening in adults who are low risk for CAD.33 For those at higher risk (a history of a nonfatal heart attack, older age, high blood pressure, smoker, abnormal cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, and being sedentary), appropriate testing is very important to prevent future cardiac events. |

Shedding excess pounds: Being overweight or obese contributes to low HDL levels and is listed as one of eight causes of low HDL cholesterol by the NCEP. Although part of this effect can be explained by obesity's action of raising serum triglycerides, which lowers HDL cholesterol, there may be other mechanisms at work as well.

3. Reduce blood cholesterol, Your risk of stroke rises with elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. And in men only, low levels of HDL cholesterol increase risk as well. (See page 12 for cholesterol-lowering strategies.)
4. Control high blood pressure. Keep your blood pressure out of the danger range (systolic pressure above 140 and diastolic above 90) using any means available-through diet, exercise, and medication, if necessary. |
| Being a little overweight (according to those darn ''weight for height" tables), if it's where your body seems comfortable while you are living this healthy life, might be fine for you. A more valuable guideline is to monitor your waist circumference because this measures the "extra" in the most dangerous place.
THE FOODS TO FOCUS ON
It's well established that fruits and vegetables are a big part of anticancer eating. Here's a sampling of some of the specific nutrients or foods that might offer valuable protection.

| If you need more evidence, consider this: A recent study looked at what happens when you feed overweight people prepared meals that are much higher in vegetables and fruits and lower in fat than what they normally eat. They had significant weight loss! In another study, when people ate more vegetables and fruits in meals, they reduced their total calorie consumption by more than 400 per day.
Experts sum up the weight-loss power of produce in two words—energy density. |
| Obesity is the most notable modifiable risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes; in fact, more than 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.
2. Increase physical activity. Both weight loss and improved fitness have been associated with the reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes. And even if it doesn't result in weight loss, regular exercise seems to pay off. For the study participants who did not lose weight, tallying more than 4 hours of exercise a week was still associated wi:h significantly less diabetes risk. |
